PRESS RELEASE
RANDOM
GRAPHICS FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS – WILLIAM KENTRIDGE
OPENING SHOW AT 34FineArt, BUCHANAN SQUARE, WOODSTOCK
23 March – 17 April 2010
34FineArt’s brand new gallery
space at Buchanan Square in Woodstock launches with an extraordinary
exhibition of William Kentridge graphic works entitled RANDOM GRAPHICS
FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS.
Almost five years ago, FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS, an exhibition of
Kentridge works, proved to be a great success at our old venue in Long
Street. It is repeated here, updated, with the focus on graphic
work.
William Kentridge is one of South Africa’s widest known and most
prolific contemporary artists. Combining innovative technical devices
with his primary expressive mode of drawing and erasing, he puts on
grand theatre and opera productions. His subject matter, typically
derived from 20th century modernist sources, is transformed,
intensified and personalized into deeply introspective narratives
touching a central nerve in most onlookers. Apart from his drawing, he
is a consummate maker of etchings and prints, as this exhibition
attests. Rarely seen together this collection is sure to inspire
aspirant collectors.
World spotlights will be trained on William Kentridge in 2010, when his
interpretation of The Nose, a 1930 opera by Shostakovich based
on an 1836 Russian short story by Gogol, opens at New York’s
Metropolitan Opera.
The recent economic recession is history – there has never been a
better time than now for owning an important artwork and making a great
art investment!
